Idea

For those sending work overseas, Prue Venables had some useful hints:

  • Using EMS parcel post, you can track your package via the Internet
  • Pack in Styrofoam boxes from the greengrocer's and lots of bubble wrap
  • And always check out Customs regulations - "unique one-of-a-kind works of art" are not cable for Customs duty whereas "functional war"' is.

Plaster Bats

Make plaster throwing bats easily using an old spring-form cake pan. After the plaster has been poured and has hardened it will easily pop out of the mould. No more messy rings or clay sausages. Just make sure you do it on the level surface.

Mini BallMill

Add a few marbles to your jars of underglaze ( 2-3 added to a 5ooml jar is adequate ) Shake vigorously before you begin and the underglaze gets beautifully stirred/ball-milled each day. This is particularly helpful if you use your under-glazes intermittently and are put off because the have settled. Simply retrieve the marbles when washing out the jar and re-use. Good source of marbles is the local flower shop who will sell them in little sacks for flower arranging purposes.

Get Packed

Ask your local plumber/electrician if you can relieve them of their waste bubble wrap. Washing machines and fridges are wrapped in copious amounts of the stuff! If you get to it quickly before it has lain on a skip in the rain you will have an excellent source of pristine, free packaging material in large quantities. If you come across more than you can use, let the VCG know and we will find an instant home for it!

Jig-Slabs

Jig-saw puzzles with missing pieces?? Jig-saw pieces pressed into clay slabs which are then stretched slightly make great, unusual surface textures. Single use only as the cardboard dampens quickly... but hey there 423 pieces to go!! Small pieces work best.

Sushi Roll

Sushi mat alternative use: Store brushes rolled in a sushi rolling mat to protect them from damage when knocking around in your tool caddy. The sushi mat, being open-weave, will allow freshly washed and reshaped brushes to dry, be stored or transported without getting misshapen or damaged.
