Sue McFarland

The alchemy of the oceans floor is the sole of these forms…

Tumble stacked into saggars with marine debris – a selection of seaweeds, sand, kelp and a variety of shells, together with various forms of copper are intentionally and creatively placed over and around bare pots. Thus forms emerge from the kiln with a natural and obvious connection to the ocean. Marks are made by shells merging into, and masking the surface of the forms, gloss appears from salts in the weed, textures are created by excess salt fluxing with the clay body, and the myriad range of colours are results of coppers.

The alchemy of the firing and blending of materials creates more than just a surface or a coating to my work; but rather a process that enhances the essence and existence of the forms.
