I began producing functional stoneware as a part-time professional potter/teacher in 1976, having discovered the excitement and satisfaction of working with clay three years earlier, as an art teacher in a Victorian country high school. Those were dynamic times for ceramics and for the next five years I embraced the production of domestic stoneware, influenced by the Leach-Hamada tradition, and Raku.
In the Autumn of 2002, after a 21 year hiatus, I began potting again. In response to an order from a highly successful and innovative local café, I began producing a range of provincial terracotta tableware. During the last year I have incorporated sgraffito decoration and some underglaze brushwork in some of these pieces.
I plan to explore some work in porcelain and Raku this year. I work in a large studio at home in Sherbrooke, a stone’s throw from Sherbrooke Forest.
In association with The Dandenong Ranges Community Cultural Centre’s Artists’ Scheme, my studio will be open every Friday from 11am-4pm from 19 March 2004. Visits can also be arranged by appointment.
