My work is primarily vessel-based and explores the formal relationships between interiors, exteriors, edges and surfaces. All my vessels show some degree of distortion. Some forms are more closed with dark openings, others are open, revealing unexpected interiors. I aim to create an interplay between glaze effects and clay surface treatments.
The work is constructed from thrown, altered and hand-built elements in white Raku clay. Crackle and Lustre glazes are applied selectively, sometimes in layers. The vessels are then Raku-fired, involving strong post-firing smoking to darken the unglazed surfaces and interior spaces producing strong contrasts..
